Benito Pablo Juárez GarcÃa, an indigenous Zapotec from Oaxaca, served as President of Mexico for five terms: 1858â1861 as interim, then 1861â1865, 1865â1867, 1867â1871 and 1871â1872.
The Mixtec and Zapotec are the two largest indigenous groups in Oaxaca. In addition there are fourteen other groups: Mazatec, Chinatec, Mixe, Chatino, Trique, Huave, Chicatec, Zoque, Amuzgo, Chontal, Tacuate, Chochotec, Ixcatec, and Popoloco. All together they comprise 48% of the population of Oaxaca.
Only one indigenous person has served as President of Mexico, and his name is Benito Juárez, a Zapotec from Oaxaca.
