Antipsychotics

Antipsychotics are a type of drugs called dopamine antagonists that reduce dopamine in the brain and are used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder,Tourette's syndrome, psychosis, and aggressiveness in autism. There are injectable forms of antipsychotics that are used to forcibly drug the mentally ill. Medicaid pays for 70 % of antipsychotics. These drugs have high noncompliance rates. Antipsychotics are commonly used among the homeless, prisons especially juvenile jails, nursing homes, and of course mental institutions. Long term use of especially first generation antipsychotics can cause tardive dyskinesia (involuntary movements tics) and tardive akathisia (anxiety, restlessness). Antipsychotics are also called neuroleptics.

Antipsychotics like Haloperidol are used to calm the mentally ill.
