The word âTowkayâ é 家 头家 literally means the âHead of Familyâ in its Chinese origin and refers to the head of an organization or someone who owns their own business. This is similar to using the term âBossâ. It is also the respectful address for such a person. Commonly pronounced the same âtauâkeâ in the Chinese Hokkien/ Teochew dialects and in the Malay language.
