Although homework is generally thought to be negative by the large part of the student population, it actually does have benefits. The main thing that makes teachers go wrong with it is by over doing it. The reason for homework is to refresh and sustain the things that you learned in class. Reasonable for math: worksheet with 15-25 problems depending on level of difficulty. What teachers actually assign: 50 math problems that take an average of 4 minutes to calculate. If we had reasonable assignments, which we sometimes do, homework would not have the extreme negative connotations that it does.
In a perfect world:
Teacher: Alright kids, for your ninth grade English homework today read a chapter, and write a four sentence summary.
Kids: Ok! That should take about twenty minutes! Yay!
Realistically:
Teacher: Alright kids, for your ninth grade English homework today read five chapters, and give me a page on the representation of disestablishmentarianism in the novel.
Kids: FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-

"Also, the only thing that will lead to success in your life and will prevent your dropping out of school and working as a frycook at McDonald's until you're 85." ... wtf?? the only thing thqat will lead you to success? only if you'e a dumbass. you don't need to do homework to not fail in life. thats bullshit. you can pass almost any class without doing any/most of your homework. i learned that once i got into high school. but hey- if you would rather sit at home and do school work, go for it. but i would rather hang out with my friends or do something else i enjoy. and doing your homework will not prevent you from dropping out or working at mcdonalds either. and whats wrong with being a frycook? which is more pathetic: having a job at mcyd's, or having no job at all and muching off your parents? you can decide..

Work assigned to students by teachers in class. Normally completed anywhere between 30 minutes and 30 seconds before it is due.
Well, 3rd period English starts in 20 minutes...I guess I'd better do my English homework.
