Protextion

The psychological defense mechanism of projection (taking something of ourselves and placing it outside of us, onto others, which can be positive or negative) as applied to text messages, emails, and social network chat windows. The resulting social phenomenon is countless misunderstandings leading to conflict and embarrassment in interpersonal relationships and in professional settings.

Angela and Charles were texting back and forth. When Angela said she was "hot", Charles, through the psychological process of protextion, placed his internal desires for Angela onto the text and interpreted her text to mean she was aroused, when really she was actually hot because it was just a damn hot day.

Protexting

Refusing to participate in the useful practice of text-messaging, no matter how appropriate or convenient the situation lends itself. Seems to be linked to age and/or coolness level.

Can also be used reciprocally, like when you dump an incoming call, and reply with a text.

Protexting activities include:

Immediately return calling sender upon receipt of text

Making people want to stab you with frivolous calls and voice messages like "I got your text, and blah...blah...blah."

Not recognizing texting as social progress.

Bitching about the 50 cents you had to pay last month because you don't have text on your plan.
