nu metal

In short, this is the Michelob Light of metal music. I wouldn't even go so far as to call it actual 'metal', but for the sake of avoiding confusion (and so I don't have to come up with a made-up definition on the spot, since I'm being a lazy jackass at the moment), we'll call it Metal Lite. Usually, nu metal songs are not very complicated in riff structure or lyrics; the riffs are often just a few strummed chords, shouted/yelled lyrics, some more strummed chords, an 'emotional' interlude, and more half-assed playing by guys who sound like they're learning as they go along. Seeking depth in Metal Lite lyrics is sort of pointless; you may as well peruse mattress tags for a Shakespearean sonnet. Often, the lyrics are of the stale, done to death "I hate mommy/daddy" (or, in some cases, both) variety. Other lyrical areas include the pain over broken relationships, and anti-society rants which read like something a psuedo-angstridden seventh grader wrote in study hall. The "us against them" theme pops up from time to time, most notably in Slipknot. Who are you against, really? Your parents? The hulking brute waiting for you every morning outside school to give you a wedgie, shake you down for your lunch money, and then toss your miserable ass in some fresh mud (and getting your cheap Hot Topic pants all gunked up!!! Oh, the horror!!!)? Metal Lite is often a common fixture on the Ozzfest tour, where bands like Marilyn Manson, Korn, Slipknot, Disturbed, etc. perform. Sometimes they will introduce lesser known bands, but they often play fiddle to the Metal Lite bands, since, I suppose, they feel their audience may react negatively to a band which actually is talented.

Metal Lite Fan 1: "Did you get Slipknot's new release"
Metal Lite Fan 2: "Oh hells yah! It totally kicked my ass! I actually pissed myself when I heard 'Duality'"
(together)"MAGGOTZ RULE!!! nu metal is the way of the future !!!"
A real metal fan: "You little Hot Profit whores. Go listen to Deicide's self-titled debut, Vader's 'De Profundis', Immolation's 'Close to a World Below', Morbid Angel's 'Altars of Madness' or Emperor's 'Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk'. Then we'll talk. Wait, what the hell am I saying? You won't listen to anything that good."

Nu-Metal

A genre of shit that claims to be related to real metal. Lyrics usually consist of whines, problems, and bitching. Most Metal Heads found Nu-Metal first and then branched off after discovering genious bands such as Opeth. Yet some claim that this horrid sound is "Heavy" or actually real "Metal", and stay with it. Nu-Metal is the most known type of metal, because its made for teens trying to get attention...Bands such as: Korn, Limp Bizkit, and Adema are common nu-metal bnds. You can recognize Nu-Metal by whiney vocals (with rap/hip hop rythms), sound effects to cover the simple guitar riffs, and really slow drumming. If you listen to Nu-Metal and wish to change your ways, Explore Death Metal. It's much better, and you'll finally know real music.

M-TV is the homebase of Nu-Metal.

nu-metal

A pathetic attempt to use the term "metal" to create a tough, hard image for shitty music that bears little, if any, resemblence to actual metal music.

There are dozens of sub-genres of metal out there, each with different sounds and everything... and nu-metal is NOT one of them.

John Petrucci plays more notes in one Dream Theater solo than all of the members of Linkin Park have ever played in their whole rotten lives, combined.

Granted, you don't *need* to have solos in your songs for them to be good. But it helps to at least have the *ability* to play them, which nu-metal bands obviously do not. It also helps to be able to write a song without picking random power chords on the guitar until a few of them sound good.

Turn on the radio, you'll hear some.

nu-metal

It probably WAS some stupid term coined by corporate tightwads, in order to try (and fail) to classify music.
As with many of these kinds of confusing undemocratic dumbasstic terms, "nu-metal" is so misused that its original intended meaning, whatever that is, is lost.

I WOULD say that we should shove "nu-metal" and other stupid terms up the corporates' asses; but i don't want anything to do with some random person's rectum.

Nu Metal

Closed-minded people would call it crap. But alot of it has meaning, and I agree that most people who don't listen to it are sissies, maybe scared of something, new?
Alot of the music is what we would call anti-establishment, against the government, namely, AMERICAN government (damn you all to hell), and war.-- Rage against the machine, and System of a Down. --
To all you stereotyping assholes, Bite me, shitheads. I'm a teenager, who DOES listen to nu-metal, and yes, I have a great life, I have good parents, I Drive a nice car. My hair may be black, but I don't slit my wrists, say my life is shit, or act all depressed. And neither do all my friends.

Hey, I like it, so take a hike all you stereotyping, opinionated losers.

nu-metal

When something "turns nu-metal", it is completely bastardized and no longer as good as it used to be.

Originates from the fact that many people have negative opinions about nu-metal, and think that metal is no longer as good as it used to be.

"Man, this guy used to be the best player on the football team, but now he sucks! He totally turned nu-metal."

nu metal

The late 90's answer to the grunge fallout, Nu Metal gave hormonal teenagers something new to latch onto and call their own.

The truth is, this is nothing new at all. Many a Nu Metal kid will deride and defemate Hair Metal and other forms of popularized 80's trash music as passe and forgetable. Not understanding that their $9.99 pieces of Best Buy chugga-chugga riffing pilfered from hardcore's rotted corpse and plunged up their mainstream-loving ass is nothing spectacular in itself.

A fad is a trend that is not a revolution. Of course, telling people below the age of 18 this is impossible. As shown on this site alone, many fans of this aural equivalent to AIDS believe it is an "evolution" or "new wave" to heavy metal and music in general.

Wrong. The Gothenburg sound is an evoltion. The use of atmospheric chording is an evolution. What Nu Metal provides is a package in which to throw all hook-laden parts of various forms of metal and other genres of music. Then it is shipped off to malls and music video outlets everywhere for consumption by impresionable idiots in phat pants.

The Devil Ham of musicology, if you will.

Anything on Roadrunner save the older catalog.

Ozzfest circa 1999-2002.

Soundtracks for bad action-horror movies. (Resident Evil, Underworld, Queen of the Damned)

Loudnet.
