D.O.L.E acronym for Department Of Labour and Employment. unemployment benefit in the UK from 1911 until 2001 when dwp took over and called it job seekers allowance and now universal credit

my granddad was on the D.O.L.E claiming fortnightly giros after the mines shut down. i finished college, couldn't get a job and now i get Universal credit but everyone still calls it "the dole"
